VR HeadWay Tracking Check
Verify that the VR headset supports the 6DOF tracking that VR HeadWay requires.
1 Introduction
If your VR headset works only in 3DoF, then unforunately VR HeadWay will not work properly because it needs translation (sway, surge, heave) to coordinate mapping and later do the math corrrectly.
2 Preliminary check
- Research your VR headset specifications: Start by checking the specifications online or in the product manual. Look for information regarding the tracking capabilities and degrees of freedom.
- Determine the tracking technology: VR headsets that support 6DOF usually use inside-out tracking or external sensors for accurate positioning and movement tracking. On the other hand, 3DOF headsets typically use gyroscopes or accelerometers to track rotation but lack precise positional tracking.
- Observe hand movements: If the VR headset includes motion controllers, check if they can be accurately tracked in 3D space. Move your hands and controllers around and ensure that their positions are reflected within the virtual environment. This is an indicator of 6DOF support.
- Check for positional tracking: Put on the VR headset and move around. If the VR environment responds accurately to your physical movements, such as walking or ducking, it likely supports 6DOF.
3 Testing with game
In order to confirm that the virtual world aligns with your real-world movements, perform the following tests:
3.1 Test #1
- Run supported VR game
- Take a seat
- Wear VR googles
- Center VR camera
- Rise in your seat
- You should find yourself on the roof of your car in simulation.
3.2 Test #2
- Run supported VR game
- Take a seat
- Wear VR googles
- Center VR camera
- Step down from the cockpit
- You should virtually stand outside of your car.
3.3 Test #3
- Run supported VR game
- Take a seat
- Wear VR googles
- Center VR camera
- Switch to ForceSeatPM and navigate to Tools and Diagnostic → VR Debug Graphs
- Place VR headset centered in the cockpit and click Save recent readings to log
- Place VR headset 50 cm to the left and click Save recent readings to log
- Check if readings in Head Sway and Head Surge changed accordingly to changes of the headset. The easiest way is to move the VR headset left/right in the air and see if graphs show the changes correctly.
- If something does not work correctly, then generate Snapshot and send to technical support.
