Yaw, and why it is the fourth axis worth adding
Adding a fourth axis to a tilt platform is a decision about which missing cue costs the most. Yaw - rotation about the vertical - is the one a tilt platform cannot approximate at all. There is no component of gravity that stands in for the car rotating under you as the rear steps out, or for a pedal turn in a hover. Pitch and roll can borrow from gravity; yaw has nothing to borrow from.
That makes four axes a specific answer rather than a halfway house between three and six. It suits scenarios built around rotation the occupant is meant to notice and react to - loss of traction, spin recovery, hovering flight, a themed ride that turns to face a new screen - in a package that still installs like a compact platform.
In the current range this configuration is the Qubic System QS-V20. If yaw is not the axis you are missing, the 3DOF platforms cover the same ground for less, and the 6DOF platforms add surge and sway alongside it.

What comes up most often when a project is being specified around this axis count.
Because four axes is a deliberate specification rather than a step on a ladder, and one well-judged platform covers it. Most projects that outgrow three axes need surge and sway as well, which takes them to six. The ones that specifically need yaw - traction loss, hover, rotating attractions - are served by the QS-V20 without paying for a hexapod.
The QS-V20 is a single pre-assembled platform with yaw built into it. A traction-loss stage such as the QS-CH2 adds surge and yaw underneath actuators you already own, which is the better route if you have a rig in service and want to extend it. Starting from scratch, the integrated platform is simpler to install and support; extending an existing installation, the stage is usually the cheaper path.
No. It is a bounded axis that swings the cockpit within a defined range and returns, in the same way pitch and roll work on a tilt platform - it is a motion cue, not a turntable. The rated excursion and velocity for each axis are in the spec table on the product page.
Yes. Vibration, belt tension and similar effects are handled by separate Qubic System add-ons that run off the same controller and software, so they can be specified alongside the platform or added later without changing the installation.
